A Unique Stay at the World’s First IKEA Hotel

For travelers looking for a unique and immersive experience, the world’s first IKEA hotel in Las Palma, Gran Canaria, offers an unconventional yet intriguing option. Dave, a British travel enthusiast known as @mrtravelon on social media, recently shared his stay at this one-of-a-kind accommodation, highlighting both its charm and its quirks.

Located near Alcaravaneras beach, the hotel, officially named Las Dunas de Santa Catalina Boutique House, opened its doors in early June. This 27-room boutique hotel is designed to offer a tranquil, adults-only atmosphere, making it ideal for those seeking relaxation. The property features a pool, garden views, and modern, minimalist rooms that reflect the iconic style of IKEA, though without overt branding.

The hotel is managed by Sarton Canarias, a franchise group based in the Canary Islands. Prices start at around £114 per night, which includes breakfast. For many, the appeal lies in the fully IKEA-themed environment, from the furniture to the decor, offering a novel experience for fans of the Swedish homeware brand.

In a video shared with his 174,000 followers, Dave gave a detailed look into his stay at the hotel. He described the interior as “amazing,” noting that everything was decorated with IKEA products. From the sunbeds surrounding the pool to the indoor furnishings, the hotel exudes a playful and functional aesthetic.

Upon entering his room, Dave was particularly impressed by how it mirrored an IKEA showroom. The double bed, rug, lighting, and desk were all branded with the company’s logo, creating a familiar yet unusual setting. He also praised the air-conditioning, fridge, and modern walk-in shower, complete with plush pink towels.

Other highlights included a Krups coffee machine, a large fluffy blanket, and a private terrace overlooking the pool. Dave exclaimed, “That's madness,” reflecting his surprise and delight at the level of detail.

In a follow-up video, Dave showcased the hotel’s continental breakfast, which was served on IKEA plates with IKEA cutlery. He noted that the breakfast was included in the price, offering a variety of items such as cold meats, cheeses, and fresh fruits like strawberries, blueberries, dragon fruit, raspberries, and blackberries. He called it “one of the healthiest breakfasts I have ever had.”

Despite the overall positive experience, Dave pointed out one notable absence: IKEA’s famous Swedish meatballs. He joked, “There's only one thing that it's missing: meatballs, gravy and hotdogs. If they put that on the menu - I'd be right in there.”

Viewers of his videos were largely impressed by the hotel’s offerings. Comments ranged from “Looks amazing” to “Wow!!!” Some fans even joked about the potential need to assemble the furniture before staying, referencing IKEA’s flat-pack tradition.

Whether it’s the unique design, the comfort of the rooms, or the novelty of dining on IKEA plates, the hotel offers a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers. While it may not be for everyone, it certainly stands out as a creative and memorable destination.
