Pancake breakfasts have long been a beloved tradition in aviation communities, offering a relaxed and informal way for pilots and the public to connect. In Middleton, Wisconsin, this tradition was celebrated on Sunday with the annual Flapjacks and Flyovers Event, organized by EAA members.

The event provided attendees with a unique opportunity to see various aircraft up close, enjoy a hearty meal of pancakes, and gain insight into what sustains local aviation. “Airports are quite often surrounded by fences, and people feel that they might be a little exclusive. So having an opportunity for people to come inside of the fence, get up close and personal with the aircraft, get to know the pilots who are flying them in, realize that when the airplane is flying above you, there’s a human being in there,” said Shane Baker, a key figure in the event.

Beyond the pancakes and the planes, the Flapjacks and Flyovers Event plays a significant role in promoting awareness about career opportunities within the aviation industry. It highlights the potential paths available for students interested in pursuing a future in aviation, including scholarships and training programs. “That is solely due to the volunteerism and the outreach efforts of our members. All of the people that you see here today coming to enjoy our pancake breakfast — they’re the reason we can offer scholarships and give kids the opportunity to learn how to fly,” Baker explained.

Since 2019, the Middleton EAA chapter has made a lasting impact by funding flight training for approximately a dozen students. The number of students receiving support continues to grow, reflecting the increasing interest and commitment to developing future aviators. This effort not only helps individuals pursue their dreams but also strengthens the aviation community as a whole.

The Flapjacks and Flyovers Event serves as more than just a social gathering; it is a vital component of the broader mission to make aviation more accessible and inclusive.
